Poem: plain

Posted on December 4, 2012October 17, 2022 by David Barker

why do extrovert and beautiful
get three syllables
but poor plain gets just one
if plain was polysyllabic
it would get more opportunities
vacations in majorca
tanning topless in a thong
while beefcake verbs look on
a mojito by the pool
then another and another
til plain (no longer plain) shouts
look at me i’m popular
trisyllabic like all the rest
latinate pronunciation
no more the blunt teuton
i use lotion not cream
have reveries when i dream
imbibe for lack of drink
and contemplate instead of think
but the seasons do wear
and ectomorphic beauties
leather in the sun and they
emerge from the chrysalis
used worldly air-kissing
polysyllabic eurotrash
remembering with fondness
a simpler time in the north
when nouns were nouns
and verbs were verbs
and people were smart
instead of intellectual
and knew that prevarication
is just a plain word for a lie
