My Favourite Culvert

There’s a culvert I’ve taken to photographing that is quickly becoming my favourite. It’s a continuation of Yellow Creek on the east side of Mount Pleasant Avenue. I want to shoot it in different lights and seasons. So far, I’ve shot it in early morning autumn light. Looking forward to shooting it in winter (before & after the water freezes) at morning, evening and even in moonlight.

I don’t know why a culvert would hold such appeal. Maybe there’s something Freudian to it: a symbolic return to the womb. I’m no Freudian, though. But there is something about the network of ravines, buried creeks, even the PATH, that evokes the idea of the unconscious mind. Toronto The Good has it’s dark underworld. Mayors go out late at night with drug dealers. Popular baby-faced radio announcers return home to beat their women. Photographers explore culverts:
