Expelled: No Intelligence Required

Posted on April 8, 2008October 17, 2022 by David Barker

Here’s something lame: the theatrical release of a documentary (narrated by Ben Stein) about the tribulations of Intelligent Design proponents. The tone of the extended trailer falls within what I would describe as the “classic passive-aggressive gambit”—paint yourself as a long-suffering victim at the hands of a cold and hostile scientific establishment to garner lots of sympathy. I get the impression, though, that the movie devotes more of its attention to documenting the vitriol hurled against ID than to the substantive claims of ID itself. Much righteous indignation. Little substance.

My inclination is to avoid the debate entirely. It’s a time-waster. What if we devoted all that intellectual energy to something useful? Rather than haggle over where we’ve come from, why not join hands to struggle with the problems that face us now that we’re here?
