The Luminous Veil

Posted on April 2, 2015October 16, 2022 by David Barker

The so-called Luminous Veil is, for me, a symbol-laden structure. The Luminous Veil is a late addition to the half kilometre length of Toronto’s Prince Edward Viaduct. It was designed to end the viaduct’s reputation as one of North America’s premiere suicide destinations.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Posted on March 17, 2015October 16, 2022 by David Barker

Some images from Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade here in Toronto. I didn’t mean to take these photos. It’s just that I had to go through the parade to get home and happened to have a camera in my pocket. Incidentally, the parade taught me a valuable lesson. In an attempt to get interesting angles…

Ice On Yellow Creek

Posted on March 11, 2015October 16, 2022 by David Barker

There’s been a lot of fuss in the news about how cold it is in southern Ontario this winter. It’s so cold, in fact, that portions of Niagara Falls have frozen. Surely, if the Niagara River is freezing at the Falls, a piddly little creek in Toronto would freeze solid. Seems logical. So why do…

Under The Glen St. Bridge in Winter

Posted on March 9, 2015October 16, 2022 by David Barker

In August, I posted photos from under the Glen St. Bridge which passes over Toronto’s Beltline Trail and Yellow Creek. But it’s worth posting new photos of the same locale. What with all the trees losing their leaves, and the lower angle of incidence for morning light, and snowfall acting as a natural reflector, things…

In the middle of winter, public drinking fountains are pretty much useless.

Bloor Street and Rosedale Valley Road

Posted on March 4, 2015October 16, 2022 by David Barker

Where Bloor Street passes over Rosedale Valley Road, there are two bridges instead of one. There’s one bridge for the road, and another for the subway.

Bloor Yorkville’s 10th Annual IceFest

Posted on March 2, 2015October 16, 2022 by David Barker

Toronto’s Bloor-Yorkville district held its annual IceFest. Just about every DSLR owner in Toronto was there, so I expect there are a gazillion images of the event floating around the Internets. Here’s my contribution to the glut.

Rides @ the Distillery District

Posted on January 15, 2015October 16, 2022 by David Barker

I shot these (merry-go-round & ferris wheel) during the Christmas Market at the Distillery District. I didn’t have a tripod with me so just jammed the camera against a post and prayed.

Men At Work

Posted on January 7, 2015October 16, 2022 by David Barker

Over time, as I do more street photography, I expect I’ll accumulate enough images to mount a credible “Men At Work” series. To be balanced, I should also mount a “Women At Work” series, too, but that will take longer because there seem to be far fewer women who work in open spaces.

Shooting Into The Light

Posted on December 30, 2014October 16, 2022 by David Barker

The rule of thumb is: shoot with the sun to your back. It’s a good rule. It means your subjects are well lit and your colours are more saturated. You don’t have weird lens flares or washed out subjects. And yet, sometimes, rules need to be broken.

MXC – Wave – Graffiti

Posted on December 29, 2014October 16, 2022 by David Barker

Yesterday, while I was walking under the St. Clair Street Bridge (aka The Vale of Avoca), I saw this guy finishing up a “Wave” on one of the concrete supports. He tagged it MXC.

Christmas Lights

Posted on December 25, 2014October 16, 2022 by David Barker

Merry Christmas! Some lights to fill you with cheer! Oops! I don’t know how this first photo got into the mix. Let’s move on to something more sanitized, shall we? Okay, so this is where I interject with my little Christmas sermon. I was not the only person shooting these trees. There was this girl,…

Yorkville At Night

Posted on December 24, 2014October 16, 2022 by David Barker

Here are three images I took one night in Yorkville. Must go back for more, especially in the summertime when it’s crowded. Each of the images has a person in it.

Hanging Outside the ROM

Posted on December 23, 2014October 16, 2022 by David Barker

The entrance to the ROM – Royal Ontario Museum – is a great place to go people watching. People are drawn to the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, so there’s a lot of tourist gawking going on.
