The Baldwin Steps climb the Iroquois shoreline which was the shore of Lake Ontario when ice age melt water made the lake significantly larger than it is today. The steps rise from Davenport Road to Casa Loma and offer a great view of the city to the south. Climbing the steps serves as a pointed reminder that, no, the city isn’t flat.
Victoria is worth exploring at night, and not just because the legislature is lit up like a Christmas tree. February is off season, so the streets are really quiet. The winter emptiness underscores how much Victoria is dependent upon tourism.
While the rest of Canada descends into a deep freeze, things stay balmy in Victoria. There’s a calm that settles over the waters of the inner harbour, broken from time to time by the sea planes, then still at night.

The entrance to the ROM – Royal Ontario Museum – is a great place to go people watching. People are drawn to the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal, so there’s a lot of tourist gawking going on.
I’m a relatively new member of the Toronto Camera Club which has been operating continuously since 1889 and is one of the larger camera clubs around. There are advantages to being big. One is that it draws decent speakers for its lecture series. Another is that there is a large pool for its internal competitions.
Here’s an image of the Canada Malting Silos at the foot of Bathurst Street in Toronto. They’re abandoned and, I expect, will be dismantled. I’ve often wondered how much beer you could get from those silos if they were full of hops.
Nuit Blanche is Toronto’s way of saying yee-haw to the arts — a festival running from sundown to sunup where people wander the streets from exhibit to exhibit.
Last night me and my camera walked a section of Yonge Street to see what we could see. I walked from Cummer Ave. south to Empress. I like Yonge Street because there’s lots of traffic and lights. In other words, it’s visually interesting.
