The American Dialect Society announces its Word of the Year.
“Plutoed” is the 2006 Word of the Year, as determined on the afternoon of January 5th, 2007.
It is a verb. To “pluto” something means “to demote or devalue someone or something, as happened to the former planet Pluto when the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union decided Pluto no longer met its definition of a planet.”
I confess some disappointment at the choice. Previous years have been edgier and more overtly political. The runner–up—climate canary—is, I think, closer to the mark. Another contender which hits close to home is flog—a fake blog posted by corporations to sell a product or movie.
Here’s wishing all of you a verbally rich 2007!
