Opposition to the Matthew Shepard Act provides continuing evidence for the bill’s necessity. When the proposed anti-hate crimes legislation came before the U.S. House of Representatives, this unleashed the worst of redneck America. For example, in the presence of Matthew Shepard’s mother, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R – N.C.) said allegations that Shepard was murdered for being gay is a hoax. Donald E. Wildmon and his crew at the America Family Association make the outrageous claim that the bill will give protected status to pedophiles. America Family News Network also makes the gay/pedophile association, but goes one further by denying that a problem even exists.
Obama has said he will sign the bill if it passes in the Senate, so the far-right (mostly fundamentalist Christians) is moving heaven and earth (so-to-speak) in a lobbying blitz on senators. This has prompted the Human Rights Campaign and other non-profits to launch a countervailing blitz. Back and forth it goes. No wonder US LGBTQ’s get frustrated and angry. No wonder we find things like the Big Fat Gay Collab on Youtube:
