We’ve just left Québec City. I have described myself as a detached, objective photographer. That is wrong. All this week as I walk around with my camera, I find myself drawn to the people here. The buildings do not interest me, nor the attractions. What is most fascinating to me is the people living and working here in the city. I am not objective; I am partisan. I am for the people. I want them to live and to love and to carry out their lives with some modicum of dignity. And I am not removed or somehow remote. Yes, I have a good telephoto lens and so I can take my photos from a distance, like a voyeur. But that’s never how it happens. I find that when I have a camera in my hand, people are more inclined to speak to me, and I am more inclined to engage them. Photography does not produce records or abstractions; it produces conversations.
